The changing landscape of legalized gaming is forcing the legendary New Jersey resort to diversify. Golf courses, shopping and dining are all part of a transformation local officials hope will position Atlantic City to better compete with the expanding plethora of gambling destinations.

Nine-hole Saranac Lake Golf Club in Lake Placid, N.Y. is about the most relaxed golf facility you will ever find. Yearly memberships are less than $300. The regulars are nice folks who just plain love golf, and many a kid has learned the game playing with a parent or grandparent here.

The Oneida Indian Nation decided to add a course to its Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona and didn't enter the golf world timidly. And by not cutting costs and sparing no expenses, the golf course is definitely in the big leagues. With three courses and a three-par, visitors are leaving very impressed. "This is a first-class operation. If you can foot the bill, this place will not disappoint," said Buffalo's Rick Eagleton.
